"I arrived just after the first snow. Two suitcases, a fifth-floor walk-up, bad heating, and a window facing a brick wall. My fingers were frozen by the time I turned the key. It felt like the correct welcome. That week, I walked. Up avenues, down alleys, through bookstores where no one looked up. The city refused to acknowledge me.
